Eligibility
Every day, more Australians decide to use a self-managed super fund (SMSF) to get onto the property ladder. Property investment has become increasingly complex with the rising cost of living and steep property prices — property investment via SMSFs provides borrowers with greater investment certainty and control over their finances.
While SMSF eligibility varies between clients, the benefits of purchasing a property via an SMSF remain the same, including:
Greater investment control — Opting to set up an SMSF to invest in property or manage your finances provides greater control over where your funds are invested.
Tax benefits — SMSFs are taxed at a concessional rate of 15%, with any benefits received by members over 60 years old being tax-free. SMSFs also provide better tax advantages around potential capital gains and taxable income.
Asset protection — SMSFs safeguard a member’s assets against bankruptcy or other credit risks.
Cost-effective — Most SMSFs costs are fixed and more affordable than professionally managed funds, making them an economically sound choice for many Australians.
Who can be an SMSF member?
Once an SMSF is established, all members become its trustees. To become a member, there are a few SMSF eligibility requirements an individual must meet, such as:
Willingly consent and accept the responsibility that comes with managing an SMSF account
Being financially stable and not declared bankrupt
Willing to comply with superannuation legislation.
Not having an employee/employer relationship with other members, not including relatives.
Who can be an SMSF trustee?
Once a person willingly accepts the responsibilities of managing an SMSF account, they become a trustee. An SMSF can have up to six members who must all be the fund’s trustees.
